Klima Small Animal Clinic Veterinarians recommend checking with us before administering medications to your of our dog or cat. However, we realize that home medications can be effective for emergency reasons.

 

 

To Induce Vomiting

  • Hydrogen Peroxide 3%

Administer 2 teaspoons full by mouth wait 5-10 minutes and repeat if needed.

 

  • Ipecac Syrup (Dogs Only)

1/2 Teaspoon per 5 lbs body weight (not more than 1 Tablespoon) Repeat if needed in 20 minutes

 

Allergic Reactions (Insect Stings, Hives, etc.)

  • Benedryl ( diphenhydramine)

1/2 - 1 mg per lb. of body weight.

Most Adults Benedryl is 25mg, the maximum dosage should be 1 mg per 1lb. of body weight 2-3 times daily if needed.

 

Example: 25 lb dog = 1 adult tablet or capsule of human Benedryl

50 lb dog = 2 adult tablets or capsules of human Benedryl

 

 

GI Upsets (vomiting and or diarrhea) (Do not continue these medications if vomiting continues, call 24 Hour Emergency Number: 1-319-232-3674)

  • Kaopectate

1/2 teaspoon per 5 lbs. of body weight every 2-6 hours.

 

  • Pepto Bismol

1/2 teaspoon per 5 lbs. of body weight every 6-8 hours.

 

Pain Medications

 

Klima small Animal Clinic Veterinarians do not recommend the use of any human pain medication 9such as Aspirin, Ibuprofen, Acetaminophen, Naproxen, etc. for your pets. NEVER give Tylenol (Acetaminophen) to Cats.
