Causes of Ear Disease

Some breeds are more susceptible to ear disease than others. Dogs with pendulous ears or dogs with hairy inner ear flaps.

Otitis Externa This disease is an infection of the external ear canal and Otitis Media, which is an infection of the middle ear. These are usually caused by bacteria or yeast.  Other forms of this disease could be attributed to the accumulation of wax, matted hair, debris or even a foreign object which could be lodged in the ear canal. If you pet has an ear infection he/she will be in discomfort and you should act quickly to treat the problem. This condition can be treated by with Antibiotics or Antifungal medications.

Ear Mites are parasites that are highly contagious, often passed from pet to pet. Excessive itching is the most noticeable sign of infestation. Ear motes create dark, powdery debris that looks like small coffee grinds.

Hematoma of the Ear Flap means blood has collected in the ear flap. The causes vary due to vigorous head shaking, scratching or trauma to the ear result in damage to the blood vessels, often set off by infection, mites, fleas or debris.

Deafness usually brought on by age, trauma, loud noise or infection, can also be hereditary or congenital. Once the pet has been diagnosed with clinical deafness, it is a life long condition.
