Old English Sheepdog

Description: Affectionately called the "Bobtail", so named because of his lack of a tail. He is an affectionately loyal dog, protective of those his loves. A natural protector he was originally the guardian of a flock and this instinct is displayed in his tendency to adopt young animals and children. Known as the "nanny dog" from Peter Pan he does not make a good guard dog.

Otterhound

Description: The Otterhound is a large, rough-coated hound with an imposing head showing great strength and dignity. He has a strong body and long striding action fit for a long day's work. He has an extremely sensitive nose, and is inquisitive and perseverant in investigating scents. Known for his big sloppy kisses and soft-heart he makes an excellent family companion though sometimes he may think he is a lap-dog.

Papillon

Description: The Papillon is a small, friendly, elegant Toy dog of fine-boned structure, light, dainty and of lively action. He is distinguished from other breeds by his beautiful butterfly-like ears. Paps are very devoted to their masters, with a hearty spirit making them desirable for show or companionship. Papillons are hardy and usually long lived. They adapt to almost any climate and are comfortable in an apartment as well as the country. They are good travelers. They love to be with their family. They are friendly, happy and eager to please. They rank the number one Toy Dog in obedience.

Pekingese

Description: The Pekingese, the ultimate lap dog and devoted companion, he will adapts to his environment and surroundings. Even though he has a mind of his own and likes to get his own way, he has an independence spirit which is his most endearing characteristics. A firm hand will let him now who is master. He is very suspicious of strangers even though he is an affectionate, noble dog who is both self-centered and stubborn.

Pembroke Welsh Corgi

Description: The Pembroke Welsh Corgi is a most agreeable small house dog with an affectionate nature. It has become closely associated with the British monarchy. In 1933 the Duke of York obtained for his daughter a Pembroke puppy and it remains a royal favorite. The Corgi is an intelligent and remarkably alert breed who is wary of strangers and makes a very good watchdog. Although known for their bark being worse than their bite, they do have a tendency to nip at the heels of people and should be discouraged at a young age to remove the trait. The Pembroke requires companionship and without this may develop undesirable methods of seeking attention. Differences between the Pembroke and the Cardigan: The Pembroke has straighter legs; is not quite as long bodied; the head is generally more wedged-shaped; the ears are smaller and closer together; it is usually lighter; and it does not have a tail or as bushy a tail as the Cardigan does.

Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen

Description: The Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen is a scent hound developed to hunt small game over the rough and difficult terrain of the Vendeen region. One of the four rough-coated hound breeds from Vendeen, France the Petit Bassett Griffon Vendeen is the smallest. He is bold and vivacious in character, compact, tough and robust in construction. A scent hound he is can hunt small game such as rabbits and feathered game.

Pharaoh Hound

Description: The Pharaoh Hounds appearance is of grace, power and speed. Medium size of noble bearing with hard clean-cut lines. A sight and scent hound, he is an intelligent and affectionate dog who is playful and enjoy a good run. Unique to the breed is the characteristic of "blushing" when excited. His nose and ears will turn a rosy color.

Polish Owczarek Nizinny

Description: The Polish Owczarek Nizinny is a medium-size, strong, muscular, shaggy dog with a long coat that covers its eyes and body. They may be born without a tail or their tail is docked at birth. Their willingness to please and devotion to their family make them great companions while at the same time a superb watchdog always on the alert for strangers. A PON's amusing ways and floppy bodies make them highly lovable. They excel at most any task they choose to undertake and are highly adaptable and suitable to almost any lifestyle. However, the breed has been known to get into mischief if left in the house alone too long.

Portuguese Water Dog

Description: The Portuguese Water Dog is a seafaring breed and was prized by fishermen in Portugal for being a spirited, yet obedient in nature dog. A web-footed dog he is a swimmer and diver of exceptional ability. Fits well into many types of lifestyles, he is usually a quiet dog who only barks when he is on watchdog duty. An intelligent, energetic dog he is self-willed but obedient to his owners.

Pug

Description: The Pug is stubby and muscular with a wide chest, straight, very strong front legs and well-muscled hind legs. He received his name Pug from the Latin word that means "clenched fist". To communicate with humans he makes a grunting nasal noise, somewhat like a pig. Snuggled down at your feet snoring or being close to you, but unobtrusive, are some of his favorite activities.

Puli

Description: The Puli (plural Pulik) is a compact, square appearing, well balanced dog of medium size. He is vigorous, alert, loving, fun and funny. Despite his appearance the Puli is no pushover and if given the chance will put any self-respecting human to shame. Used successfully as police dogs in Hungary he makes a great companion. Puppies are highly intelligent and quick to learn.

Description: The Rat Terrier is a small, powerful, very intelligent, great for sports, utility or companion dog. Very loyal, loving, protective of its loved ones and possessions, and also a great hunter and comedian if the occasion calls. Description: Well-proportioned and athletic, he is powerful and good-natured. He is more heavily built than the Irish Setter. Aristocratic, keen and intelligent. Strong, powerful, well-balanced and proportioned without lumber. They display a kindly, friendly attitude, behind which is a discernible determination, courage and high spirit. May first appear aloof, but warms to companionship quickly.

Redbone Coonhound

Description: The Redbone Coonhound is a dog of breathtaking beauty with it's short, deep, rich, red coat; muscular body; long floppy ears that can reach the nose; large eyes that beg to please you; feet of elegance in the shape of a cat paw. The feet are webbed so swimming is a must and a sport they very much enjoy. The Redbones are happy dogs with a pleasing voice. They are intelligent; rugged; and adapt to many terrains. They have a natural instinct to hunting and treeing coons but are equally proficient trailing and treeing bear, cougar and bobcat. Description: A Rhodesian Ridgebacks uniqueness is the ridge on the back, formed by the hair growing in the opposite direction to the rest of the coat. A strong muscular and active dog, symmetrical outline and capable of great endurance with speed.

Rottweiler

Description: The Rottweiler is a medium-large, robust, powerful dog. His build denotes great strength, agility and endurance. The Rottweiler is a working dog, he is the happiest when there is a job to do whether it is herding, competing in obedience, tracking, search and rescue or retrieving the newspaper. He is an effective guard dog, but needs firm handling and proper training. A Rottweiler will defend his family and property to the end, but he does have a tendency to become loyal to one person. An inexperienced owner should not consider this breed.

Saint Bernard

Description: The St. Bernard is powerful, strong, muscular with an some what sad looking expression. He is a faithful, gently, kindly breed who loves children. He requires no training for his work since generations of service seemed to have stamped the rescuing instinct upon his character. Because of his size he does not make a breed for an apartment dweller as he needs plenty of space and large food rations. A well-trained Saint Bernard is a mellow, affectionate, lazy dog who will protect your home. Until the bones are fully formed in puppies it is best to keep their activity to a minimum.

Saluki

Description: The dogs of the Pharaohs, the Saluki is a slim, high-stepping, elegant dog who was used in Arabia for hunting of gazelles and other game with falcons. He is also known as the Gazelle Hound, Arabian Hound, Eastern Greyhound and the Persian Greyhound, he can have running bursts of up to 40 mph with exceptional endurance. An aloof, cautious dog, he is strongly committed to his family.

Description: The Samoyed is a good-natured, mischievous, family dog who has a fondness for people, especially children. The beauty of a Samoyed with his smile which extends from ear to ear will attract attention when he is out. An owner of a Samoyed should be somebody who is willing to give of his time in both grooming and activity. He does not shed, instead you will find his woolly undercoat coming out like white balls of fluff floating through the air.

Scottish Terrier

Description: Known as the "Scottie", the Scottish Terrier has a compact, strong body; short legs, pricked ears and naturally erect tail. His face should wear a keen, sharp and active expression. President Roosevelt had a Scottie named Fala in the White House. He tends to be a one or two person dog and does his best as a pampered pet. While a little stubborn, he still makes a loyal pet if given the change to survey the scene before committing himself. A very good watchdog, but he needs to be keep secured as he has a tendency to wander.

Description: The Sealyham Terrier is the embodiment of power and determination, ever keen and alert, yet free from clumsiness. Resembling the wire fox terrier, he is a playful, with an eager to please, outgoing, friendly attitude. He also has his own sense of humor and like many terriers makes a delightful companion. Shetland Sheepdog

Description: The Shetland Sheepdog bears resemblance to the Rough Collie. Strong, nimble and lightly built the Sheltie is a fast runner and can jump well. Shetland Sheepdog puppies are beguiling and exhibit a desire to please from a very young age. Intuitive and responsive to his owner's wishes, he makes a charming family pet. Take care that he is not startled teased, or left alone as he can be barky when excited or lonely.

Shiba-Inu

Description: The Shiba-Inus with his outgoing personality, convenient size, and good nature has made him the most common pet in the Japan. Growing in popularity worldwide it has only been in recent years that he has been seen out of his native land. Though he may be difficult to train, if he is handled with consistent firm training he will respond well. He is not a dog for the faint-hearted as he is a large animal in a small body. Shiba Inus are loyal and possess a good sense of what you are feeling. He needs to have human interaction and should not be left alone in the back yard. Unique vocal sounds his bark may sound like a "yodel". He will usually only bark when he has reason.

Shih Tzu

Description: The name "Shih Tzu" means lion dog in Chinese and he received the name because of his long, flowing mane-like coat. The Shih Tzu is a sturdy, lively, toy dog with long flowing double coat. He has a distinctively arrogant carriage with head well up and tail curved over the back. He may display an arrogant personality, but is actually playful and gentle. He adapts well to any family situation and will enjoy a cuddle in your lap, doing tricks, or fetching a tennis ball.

Siberian Husky

Description: The Siberian Husky has a sweet nature and is a breed who is suited for the whole family, but he does not make a good guard dog. Gentle in character with a determined look he is a very people oriented dog. Males have a tendency to roam and need to be kept in a fenced in area. If he gets out it may be impossible to catch him on foot. A member of the Spitz family, the Siberian Husky is strong and has the ability to haul heavy loads over long distances and rough terrain. They will happily pull a young child in a wagon or sled.

Soft Coated Wheaten Terriers

Description: The Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier is a medium-sized, hardy, well balanced sporting terrier, square in outline. Distinguished by his soft, silky, gently waving coat of warm wheaten color and his steady disposition. He is a jolly breed who will retain his carefree puppy-ness right into adulthood. Puppies are born dark apricot but lighten to a clear golden wheaten color by two years of age.

Toy Manchester Terrier

Description: The Toy Manchester Terrier (or English Toy Terrier) were registered as separate breeds until 1959 when they became a single breed with the Manchester Terrier with two varieties, the Toy and the Standard. It should be noted that the Toy Manchester may not have their ears cropped as they larger counterparts can. He is a Toy breed with definite terrier characteristics which make him a devoted pet who is faithful to his owner. He enjoys the comforts of home and should be given a soft bed to lay down in.

Description: Identical to the Standard and Miniature Poodle except in height, he is a decent of the Miniature Poodle.
