Field Spaniel

Description: The Field Spaniel is a combination of beauty and utility, well-balanced, substantial hunter-companion of medium size. Built for activity and endurance in heavy cover and water. A noble carriage, proud but docile attitude, sound and free-moving. He is a docile, affectionate, intelligent breed who is eager to please. Suited for family life he is also willing to work and is suited for hunting in open terrain.

Fila Brasileiro

Description: A massive breed, one of the powerful Molossers, the Fila Brasileiro is also known as the Brazilian Mastiff or Cao de Fila. Known for his outstanding courage and bravery, he is obedience to his owner but is an unsurpassed guardian of his property. He is also used to hunt big game and herd cattle. Before considering a Fila, understand the needs of this breed as he is a large responsibility.

Description: The Finnish Spitz or Finsk Spets is the national dog of Finland. He is an independent, reserved, cautious and sometimes aloof breed. As he was bred to be a hunter he needs to be kept in a secure fenced yard or he may go off on a hunting expedition. Sensitive and strong minded he is loyal to his human family and loves being with children.

Fox Terrier (Wire)

Description: The Fox Terrier (wire) is a gay, lively, active dog. Identical to the Smooth Fox Terrier except for his coat. He is affectionate and trainable making the ideal child's companion. Never refusing to play he does everything will full force such as scrambling over furniture to reach a ball. Eager to please and clean in his household habits he makes a delightful companion for active people.

French Bulldog

Description: The French Bulldog has the appearance of an active, intelligent, muscular dog of heavy bone, smooth coat, compactly built and of medium or small structure. "Frenchies" are bred primarily as pets and companions, but they do make a good watchdog. He is to some limits a smaller version of the English Bulldog. Frenchies makes good apartment dogs, but do enjoy roaming outside on a lead. A wonderful companion to a small children who loves to play dress-up or a lonely delivery driver looking for a lighthearted partner to ride shotgun. In a family situation he behaves like a child, demanding a great deal of personal attention and interaction.

German Shepherd Dog

Description: The German Shepherd Dog is a strong, agile, well muscled dog, alert and full of life. He is extremely intelligent and makes a wonderful companion, show or obedience dog. The German Shepherd is exceptionally trainable and works well as a police, guide, search, rescue dog. He is one breed that becomes truly bonded to his family and may suffer from separation anxiety when apart from his people.

Description: The German Shorthaired Pointer is a versatile hunter, an all around gun dog capable of high performance in field and water. An excellent watchdog. He prefers to live with people and should not be left alone. If he has to be kenneled he should have a playmate. He is reliable with children and makes a good family pet. Exercise is vital for a well balanced dog.

German Wirehaired Pointer

Description: The German Wirehaired Pointer is a well-muscled, medium sized dog of distinctive appearance. Balanced in size and study built. He has weather resistant, wire-like coat, bushy eyebrows, mustache and beard. Loves human companionship, but does not do well in apartment living as he needs extensive exercise. An all-around gundog, he likes to hunt birds and small animals making him a high energy dog. The German Wirehaired Pointer makes an excellent watchdog.

Description: The Schnauzer family comes in three sizes; giant, standard and miniature but they are each considered separate breeds. The Giant Schnauzer is an unusual looking dog who has high spirits, stamina and loyalty. Independent and intelligent he needs firm, but consistent training. He may be aggressive with strangers and will make an excellent watchdog.

Goldens love to swim and should be allowed to do so whenever possible. Though he will adapt well to a kennel environment, he prefers human companionship and is not happy in solitude.

Description: A good-sized, sturdily built, black and tan dog, well muscled, with plenty of bone and substance. The Gordon Setter is a tireless worker and enjoys abundant exercise and attention. He is a better watch dog than the other setters, making him a loyal and protective pet. A lovable, friendly, intelligent dog who is sensitive and gentle.

Great Dane

Description: The Great Dane is regal in appearance, having dignity, strength and elegance. He is the tallest of dog breeds with his great size and well-formed muscled body. Known as the friendly giant, he should show no unprovoked aggression. There are times he may have a stubborn streak, but early training will help alleviate this problem. The Dane makes a great family dog with his gentle, loyal and affectionate nature and patience with children. Adapts well to urban living if given plenty of space and exercise. Despite his large size he should not be kenneled but kept indoors as a member of the family. He truly loves the comforts of home and you may find him sleeping in your big easy chair.

Description: The Great Pyrenees gives the distinct impression of elegance and unsurpassed beauty combined with great overall size and majesty. He has a weather resistant coat that will allows him to withstand intense cold temperatures. He needs human companionship and attention and lots of space. The Great Pyrenees will not do well with apartment dwellers. He is a pleasant, gentle breed of enormous size, extremely intelligent, loyal to his family.

Description: The Greater Swiss Mountain Dog or Grosser Schweizer Sennenhund is the largest member of the Swiss mountain dogs. He is your typical draft dog who loves farm chores, pulling carts and sled and children. Enjoys being a part of a family.

Greyhound

Description: The Greyhound is a swift as a ray of light and graceful as a swallow. He is one of the oldest and purest known breeds. The Greyhound has been used on practically all kinds of small game, but the hare is his natural quarry. Normally a quite dog, he like to curl up on his dog bed and be lazy most of the day.

Description: The Harrier looks like a smaller version of the English Foxhound and must have all the attributes of a scenting pack hound including a keen sense of smell and a good nature. He is friendly, gentle and responsive making him a charming family companion. A true hound at heart he is independent, willful, vocal and somewhat stubborn.

Havanese

Description: The Havanese is related to the Bichon Frise and may be referred to as the Bichon Havanese or as the Havana Silk Dog. He is a happy, outgoing small dog who's temperament and trainability have made him an excellent candidate for obedience training. He can not miss what is going on around him, so you may find him sitting somewhere high. He can be quite vocal as he loves the sound of his own voice.

Ibizan Hound

Description: The Ibizan Hound or Podenco Ibicenco is native to Ibiza one of the Spanish Balearic Isles. He has clean-cut lines, large pricked ears and light pigment. Used primarily as a hunting dog whose quarry is rabbits he can hunt by sound as well as sight. The Ibizan is a even tempered breed who is not given to great burst of affection, but are quite, loyal and giving and enjoy human companionship.

Description: The Irish Setter is an aristocratic bird dog, who has a rich, lustrous red coat and an expressive face. He is a friendly and amusing dog who enjoys children and make a good pet, gundog or watchdog. He enjoys human companionship and may be boisterous at times. Irish Water Spaniel

Irish Wolfhound

Description: The Irish Wolfhound is one of the largest and tallest of dogs in the world. By the age of six months he can weigh as much as ninety pounds and he does not reach maturity until twenty to twenty-four months. Dispute his great size he is most gentle in nature. Known as the gentle giant, he is a perfect gentleman who shows no signs of aggression. Willing to please his owners, he makes a good family dog for those who have adequate space and a lifestyle to feed him as he is rather expensive to look after.

Italian Greyhound

Description: The Italian Greyhound is sometimes referred to as the "IG" is the smallest of the sighthounds. He is very similar to the Greyhound, but he is much smaller and more slender in all proportions. He is lively and full of good spirits and wants to please, craves affection and returns it gladly. He adapts well to indoor living. Prone to chills he should be kept in a draft-free environment and given a warm bed to snuggle in. The IG is not a noisy dog, gets along will with other pets and is a clean, odorless dog. He must be handled very gently and should not be placed in a noisy household.

Description: The Jack Russell Terrier or Parson Jack Russell Terrier is a small, agile, brave terrier, who is good at hunting small animals like foxes and raccoons. Like other terriers he may bore easily and is capable of inventing his own entertainment. He is a tough little dog who is clean and a convenient size for a companion.

Japanese Chin

Description: The Japanese Chin is a lively, little dog with a dainty appearance who loves to cavort and play. He has a compact carriage and profuse coat. His movement is stylish, lifting his feet high when in action, and carrying his tail proudly curved or plumed over his back. Formerly called the Japanese Spaniel his name was changed to the Japanese Chin in 1977. A gentle and affectionate breed he is meticulously clean and very easy to house break. If you enjoy an affectionate, playful lapdog then a Japanese Chin would make an excellent companion.

Keeshond

Description: The Keeshond (plural is Keeshunden) is a natural, handsome dog who resembles the spitz of the northern breeds with his richly plumed tail that curls over his back and his thick coat. His sharp clear bark makes him a good watch dog but he doesn't have a mean bone in his body and is an affectionate and loving companion. In Holland he was called the "smiling Dutchman" for his perpetual good-natured grin.

Kerry Blue Terrier

Description: The Kerry Blue Terrier is gentle, lovable and intelligent. An all-round working and utility terrier. He is successfully in herding sheep and cattle. He has rich long hair on his face and a curly gray coat. Outgoing and friendly towards his family, he is known to give big slurpy kisses. Puppies are born black and their coats begin to change sometime between nine and twenty-four months to red, brown or gray and then Kerry blue

Komondor

Description: The Komondor (plural is Komondorok) is a big, muscular dog with plenty of bone and substance, covered with an unusually, heavy, white corded coat which resembles and old-fashioned string mop. Puppies are white and fluffy and tend to form cords at about 3 to 4 months of age. He is very strong and agile for his size. A hardy, healthy dog he can tolerate changing temperatures. Keeping the coat of a Komondor is a challenge and should not be taken lightly. Cords continue to grow and must be maintained by dividing new hair growth every two to three months from the skin out to the existing cords. If not trimmed regularly the coat will reach the ground by the time he is 6 years old. Another consideration is that coat is always picking up debris from outside like dirt, leaves, twigs, small living creatures and this needs to be removed.

Kooikerhondje

Description: Named for a Dutch duck hunting technique he is seldom seen outside the Netherlands where he is kept as a companion dog. He is a medium sized dog much like a small setter or spaniel in appearance especially with his bushy tail which he uses to lure wild ducks so they can be banded. Cheerful and easy to manage he is affectionate with his owners making him a good hunter's companion or a delightful family dog. Some historian mentioned the Kooiker as possibly playing a part in the development of the Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever.

Kuvasz

Description: The Kuvasz (plural is Kuvaszok) is a working dog of larger size, sturdily built, well balanced, neither lanky nor cobby. He is white in color with no markings. He impresses the eye with his strength and activity. A one-family dog he is extremely loyal, obedient, active and strong but is wary of strangers.

Description: The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, very active dog. Wide over the loins and strong and muscular hindquarters. He is easy to train and is good with children and other dogs. Description: The Laekenois is one of the Belgian shepherd dogs, but not widely recognized outside his homeland. In the US he is the only Belgian Shepherd Dog not recognized by the AKC. He is identified by his rough and wiry coat.

Lowchen

Description: The Lowchen or Little Lion Dog is a member of the Bichon group. He has a long, silky coat trimmed in the traditional "lion clip". A spunky, high spirited dog he is also happy to just curl up in your lap. Originally used in France as a watch dog, he is gaining international popularity. Not considered a rare breed, he is still uncommon.

Description: The Maltese is a member of the Bichon family and is one of the oldest European breeds. He has a beautiful mantel of long, silky, white hair, this is his crowning glory. He is gentle-mannered and affectionate, yet playful and full of animation. Despite his size, he posses the vigor needed for a excellent companion. The Maltese is intelligent and easy to train but is very strong-willed. He enjoys being groomed, petted and fondled.

Description: The Maremma Sheepdog is a majestic white dog, of a large size and a rustic appearance. He is strong, active, and for his size, very lithe. He is a working dog and needs a job to keep him occupied. His function has been to guard the flock and property of the shepherd for millennia, even in situations where man is not present. He is devoted to his master but treats him as an equal and a friend. He is affectionate with people he knows. Norfolk Terrier

He has an affectionate personality with a passion for digging. Playful, he enjoys playing catch, hiking in the woods or burrowing after little critters. The Norfolk Terrier is a cousin to the Norwich Terrier and is similar except his ears are rounded instead of pricked.

Norwegian Buhund

Description: The Norwegian Buhund is herding dog from the spitz family. They are a lightly-built, compact dog. They are the farm dogs of Norway. "Bu" in Norwegian means homestead or the mountain hut lived in by shepherds at the summer pastures, and "hund" of means dog. In Norway they are still used as a general-purpose farm dog but in other parts of the world they are now trained as hearing dogs, police protection and tracking dog, child's companion and obedience dog. The Buhund has the desire for human companionship and makes an ideal family pet as they are also very affectionate.

Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever

Description: The Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retriever who was once known as the Little River Duck Dog is one of the smallest retrievers. He uses the art of tolling which is to frisk and leap about at the mouth of a funnel-like net in order to lure ducks into the trap. Strong and reliable, he never hesitates to jump into icy-cold water. A wonderful companion, a great playmate and a flashy show dog, he is a willing and happy bird dog.
