Communication
builds good relationships
between people and your family
pet member. Dogs communicate
between themselves by means of
body signals. It is only natural
that they would use the same
methods to communicate with you.
To learn to interpret these
signals is your responsibility
as a pet owner. By learning
these signals, you will be able
to teach your puppy/dog the
acceptable means of telling you
what he or she needs or would
like, whether it be food, let
outdoors, play or to just
receive some loving attention.
Parents often don't remember
to commend their children when
they behave well, yet usually
never forget to tell them when
they are not so well behaved, we
tend
to do the same with our pets. We
have tendencies to disregard
them when they are quiet and pay
attention only when they behave
unacceptably. It is best to do
just the opposite, praise and
reward preferred behavior, and
ignore the unwanted.
Undesirable Behavior should
be ignored. Just like humans,
dogs are social animals and have
the need to interact with
others. Withholding your
attention is a very effective
method of passive punishment. An
illustration would be if your
dog jumps up on you, cross your
arms, turn your head away and
remain utterly silent until he
or she stops jumping. Refrain
from pushing him away, look at
or talk to him. He'll interpret
any of these actions on your
part as attention, or even play.
when your pet finally sits,
reward him with your complete
attention.
If in the past, you have
allowed your pet to gain
attention in a wrongful way,
like
barking
or jumping, note that if you
decide to ignore these and
retrain your pet that he will
only try longer and harder to
regain your attention. To be
successful at retraining you
must ignore and outlast all of
his efforts.
Undesirable Behavior can be
interrupted. Dogs do react to
eye contact. Call your puppy or
dog by his or her name. As soon
as he looks at you, you should
give him a special treat.
repeating this simple exercise
will teach your pet that it is
worth their while to pay
attention to you. In fact,
calling your pet's name is an
effective way of interrupting,
and eventually eliminating
unwanted behavior. Making an
unusual sound can also work in
the same fashion, interrupting
the behavior.
Puppies and dogs need to exercise and play and to
connect and interact with both people and other dogs.
They
should be taught to have fun with toys only and should learn that
human hands, feet, or any other part are not toys. If your pet grabs
your hand or foot, either on purpose or accidentally, such behavior
should be interrupted either by withholding attention or by making
ear-piercing "ouch" sound. As soon as he lets go, offer a large toy
and resume playing.
