Just
like humans, cats get sick too. Chances are that you
will be given at some point by your
veterinarian medications to administer to your cat. Learning how to do it the right way will make the
process easier for both you and your cat. Always follow the
instructions given by your veterinarian. Be sure to
always administer the full amount of medication over the
number of days instructed by your veterinarian.
Tilt the head back until the cat's eyes are
facing upward
Usually the cat's jaw will drop open on its own.
If it doesn't, apply a little pressure on the lower
jaw with your middle finger
Bring the pill to the cat's mouth
Step Three
Keep the middle finger
over the small incisor teeth and deposit the pill as
far back on the tongue as possible
Immediately close the
mouth
Step Four
Stroke the throat or blow on the nose to
encourage swallowing
Liquids & Syrups
Read the label on the medication s
for proper dosage. if instructed shake the bottle.
Step One
Fill a syringe or eye dropper
with meds before starting
Liquid medication is poured
into the pouch between the teeth and cheek
Hold your cat's jaw closed and
tilt the head back slightly
Step Two
Gently squirt the medication
into the pouch with the dropper or syringe
Pilling Devices
Should you wish, you could use
pilling devices to avoid placing your fingers into the
cat's mouth. A pilling device is usually a plastic tube
resembling a syringe used to deposit pills.
Hold the device like a syringe
between your index and middle fingers, using the
thumb to push the plunger
Tilt the head back until
the cat's eyes are facing upward. Usually the cat's
jaw will drop open on its own. If it doesn't, apply
a little pressure on the lower jaw with your middle
finger
When administering meds stay calm -
you pet can sense if you are nervous, which will
make it more difficult for you to apply the treatment.
Always give your pet praise and reward him with a
treat when the process is complete.
Avoid medicating your dog on the
floor or in your arms. Place the dog on a table with
a non-slip surface.
Ask your veterinarian if the
medication can be given with food or must be given
on an empty stomach. If it can be given with food,
place the pill into a small treat like a piece of
cheese or other small amount of food which is
recommended by your veterinarian.
